Leon Wilde's Genealogical Research Website

Description: Chronological Summary ("Chrono")

Last Update: May 1999

Chronological summaries are designed to present all pertinent original source information available on an individual in chronological order. Original source information is supplemented by clearly marked conjectural or reconstructed information on key genealogical events for which direct sources aren't known to exist.

A chronological summary entry typically consists of an entry heading in the left margin, followed by the entry body containing either an abstract of an original record, or else a presentation of conjectural or reconstructed information, as follows:

Entry heading

A brief word or abbreviation indicating the type of event. Headings used are:

•  Birth

•  Marr

•  Death

•  Son

•  Dau

•  Movt

•  -----

(i.e., birth of son)

(birth of dau)

(change of residence)

(all other events)

A question mark after a heading indicates that the record may not involve the subject of the chronological summary.

Entry body --
original record abstract

Contains an abstract which is true to an original record, formatted as follows:

•  Starts with date and place of event as given in record

•  Names are spelled exactly as given in record

•  Parentheses appear when used in original record, or when enclosing information which is faithful to the meaning of the original record

•  Any included information not found in the original record is enclosed in braces ({}) or brackets ([]) to distinguish it. Braces enclose explanatory genealogical relationships on an individual. Brackets enclose any other explanatory or conjectural information.

•  Ends with precise source citation enclosed in double angle quote marks («»). Intended to contain sufficient detail to allow others to find and check original source.

Entry body --
conjectural or reconstructed information

Entire entry is enclosed in brackets ([]). Starts with an estimated date and place, as in an original record abstract.
