Southern Maryland to Southern Virginia Migrations
in Late 1700's/Early 1800's

Last Update: May 1999

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

As I was researching the line of my 3rd great-grandparents Joseph Broady and Jane Dent, I noticed that they seemed to be part of a fairly significant wave of late 1700's and early 1800's era migrations from Southern Maryland to the Southern Virginia counties of Bedford, Pittsylvania, Henry, Franklin and Patrick. I've set up this area of my website to gather information about the persons involved in this migration.

Highlighted names below link to chronological summaries for the indicated person.

PITTSYLVANIA CO.

The earliest migration of someone connected to Charles Co. appears to have been to Pittsylvania Co. I have not done much research in this county so my information is sketchy. Persons I have found of interest in this county are as follows:

Humphrey Posey appeared in Pittsylvania Co. records, apparently in the Strawberry Creek area, as early as 1768. His name clearly indicates that he was from the Charles Co. Posey family, but he may have been in other parts of Virginia for an extended period prior to his coming to Pittsylvania Co. He relocated about 1773 to what became Henry Co. At present I don't know who this Humphrey's father was.

John Philpott {John4,Charles3,Edward2,Edward1}, a native of Portobacco Parish in Charles Co., was referenced as a resident of Pittsylvania Co. in a Dec 1778 deed in which he bought land in Henry Co. He probably took up residence in Henry Co. shortly afterward.

Harrison Musgrave may have been a son of Harrison Musgrave {son of Charles}, who resided Portobacco Parish in Charles Co., and was a neighbor and kin of the Poseys and Philpotts. The younger Harrison was in the 1782 state census of Pittsylvania Co. I have done very little research on him.

Ignatius Tennison appeared in the 1782 state census.

A Joseph "Tomblen" appeared in the 1782 state census, possibly a garble for Joseph Townlin {poss son of Thomas}, formerly of Trinity Parish in Charles Co. Joseph was in Henry Co by 1784.

A relative latecomer to Pittsylvania Co was Thomas Dent {William4,Thomas3,John2,John1}, who came from Charles Co. about 1817. He remained in Pittsylvania Co until the late 1830's, when he left for Cherokee Co GA (probably only briefly), and then Heard Co GA.
