30 Jun 1779 Chas Co: Charles Davis gave a deposition during an examination of the bounds of tract "Oneal's Desert" [lying in Newport E Hd] then in the possession of Thomas Matthews; deposition given as follows «ChCP Y3:474»: "Charles Davis aged about Forty two years being duly sworn on the holy Evangel Deposeth and Saith that about Twenty five years agoe he this Deponent was shewed the place where he now stands and at that time stood a small white oak tree that had some marks thereon being on the east side of Gilbert Swamp and within fifteen yards of said swamp this Deponent further saith that the place above described was shewed him by John Dyson and Thomas Dyson, and that the said John and Thomas Dyson had their information from their Grand Father John Dyson and their uncle Thomas Dyson to be the begining bound tree of a tract of Land called Oneals Desert and further this Deponent saith not.
